Biohaem Department

Our Biohaem laboratory employs a team of skilled technicians, offering a same day turnaround service. We also employ two Pathologists for interpretation of cases and to oversee any abnormal results.

The laboratory offers a full haematology service including manual differential cell counts, analysis of cell morphology and automated red and white cell values. We can also perform haematology on exotic cases and as such process samples from zoos and wildlife parks. We also offer Coombs testing in-house, buffy coat analysis and free reticulocyte counts, for any anaemic animals.

Coagulation testing can be performed in-house offering PT, APTT and Fibrinogen results using sodium citrate samples.

The biochemistry laboratory can process a wide range of chemistry and endocrinology tests and also handles urinalysis, and calculi analysis. We have an Immulite 2000 analyser to perform endocrinology and a Beckman Coulter AU680 for chemistry testing. The laboratory separates the serum from the whole blood for processing using centrifugation.

Urinalysis is also performed offering dip-stick results, sediment examination and urine chemistry. Crystals, cells and bacteria can be identified and passed to microbiology and cytology for any follow-on tests.

Calculus analysis can be performed to identify the chemical composition of bladder stones to aid in their treatment.

Cytology Department

Cytology samples are processed by our trained technicians. The samples require a different process depending on the site of extraction and the sample type. Fluid samples have a smear made and are taken to our team of Pathologists for reading. Pleural, ascetic, pericardial and abdominal fluids all require a cell count, Total protein, albumin and globulin test as standard. Joint and synovial fluids have a cell count and total protein and CSF fluids have a nucleated cell count and urine protein performed.

Histology Department

Finn Pathologists started life as a Histology laboratory and over the years has gained a reputation of excellence throughout the UK and Europe. We have a laboratory of highly skilled histology technicians and a team of pathologists from all over the world.

Our client base covers all of the UK and the EU with samples also arriving from more exotic destinations!

Special stains and decalcification are available to assist the pathologists’ diagnosis at no extra cost.

Immunohistochemistry is run once a week and we have a selection of around 25 different antibodies. We can also arrange for other antibody testing through referral labs.

Our years of experience allow us to produce the highest quality work with quick turnaround times and the knowledge to process any case, however unique. We continually look to refine our techniques to assist the pathologists in the reporting of cases.

Microbiology Department

The microbiology laboratory offers aerobic and anaerobic culture with antibiotic susceptibility testing on all sample sites, as well as faecal testing for parasites, Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Parvovirus, Salmonella spp., Campylobacter spp., and Yersinia spp.

The hot topic within microbiology is antimicrobial resistance this is why we test for methicillin resistant strains in Staphylococci and Esβl & AmpC mechanisms in enterobacteriaceae. The importance of this is so that we can offer you the information you need to choose the most appropriate antimicrobial therapy.

We are currently providing Staphylococcus aureus strains from rabbits for a Bacterial genome sequencing project to understand Staphylococcus aureus infections in rabbits. We are also part of a wider project ComPATH II (CEESA/IFAH-EUROPE) to collect bacterial strains of interest for the monitoring of antimicrobial susceptibilities.

We also test for dermatophytes and fungi, look for external parasites and offer MRSA/MRSI screening and environmental monitoring.
